Did you know the origin of President’s Day dates back to the 1800s and stems from the birthday of our 1st U.S. President, George Washington? In fact, before we celebrated President’s Day, we celebrated “Washington’s Birthday” on February 22nd. However, in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill, which moved “Washington’s Birthday" from February 22nd to the third Monday in February. In 1971 the holiday was officially renamed to President’s Day, to honor both George Washington, and our 16th U.S. President, Abraham Lincoln, as his birthday was February 12th. Now President’s Day is popularly thought of as a holiday to recognize, celebrate, and honor all U.S. presidents.
